The bus is transport, not a tour
Both scheduled highland services are unguided. You board, you are driven over the F-roads in a high-clearance 4x4 bus that crosses the fords without drama, you are set down at the campsite, and you make your own plans until the return departure. There is no commentary and no itinerary. Reykjavík Excursions runs route HB02 from BSÍ and the Reykjavík campsite; Trex runs from City Hall and the Laugardalur campsite with a pick-up in Hella, which is useful if you are already staying on the south coast. For hikers starting the Laugavegur, this is the standard way in — it is the only option that does not require you to come back the same day.
What a super-jeep day actually looks like
A super-jeep day tour from Reykjavík typically runs around twelve hours door to door, leaving the city in the morning and returning in the evening, with roughly three hours on the ground at Landmannalaugar. The vehicle is a modified high-clearance 4x4 driven by a guide who does this route daily, which removes both the legal and the financial exposure of driving yourself. Operators generally build in stops on the way, commonly at waterfalls such as Hjálparfoss and Sigöldufoss, the Ljótipollur explosion crater, and viewpoints towards the Hekla volcano. Itineraries vary by operator and by conditions, so read the specific tour page rather than assuming a standard route.
Self-drive: the real cost is the liability, not the fuel
Self-driving is legal and, on the northern F208, technically undemanding — but the economics are not what they look like. A 4x4 rental plus fuel is often comparable to two bus fares, and the saving disappears entirely against a single uninsured water-damage claim, which no Icelandic policy tier covers. If you do drive, the sane version is to take the northern F208, park at P1 before the fords, and walk over the footbridge. That gets you there in your own vehicle, on your own schedule, without ever putting a wheel in a river. Book the parking space in advance; it is now compulsory in the middle of the day.
Timetables and road openings are two different things
A bus season start date is a commercial decision; a road opening is a snow measurement. In 2025 the northern F208 opened on 23 May, well before any scheduled service began, while in 2022 it did not open until 23 June — after the usual mid-June season start. Operators plan around the average and adjust, so an early-season departure can be cancelled or delayed if Vegagerðin has not yet opened the route. Booking windows and why seats go early
The season is short — roughly three months — and the number of vehicles that can reach Landmannalaugar in a day is limited by road capacity and by the parking scheme, which caps how many cars and buses may be in the area during the middle of the day. Highland bus seats in July and August, and super-jeep places on fine-weather weekends, go well ahead. If your trip is fixed to particular dates, book the transport before you book anything on the ground. If your dates are flexible, early September often has both better availability and quieter trails, at the cost of a rising chance of an early closure.
