When Landmannalaugar Opens: F-Road Dates
Vegagerðin opens F208 and F225 only when the snow clears — here are the real opening dates from the last five seasons.

Nobody publishes an opening date in advance
There is no calendar for the Icelandic highlands. Vegagerðin, the national road administration, states plainly that the state of snow cover is the single most important factor in deciding when a mountain road can be opened to traffic, and it inspects each section before lifting the closure. Wet ground matters too: a road can be snow-free and still stay shut because vehicles would rut the surface and damage the fragile ground beneath. Conservation restrictions inside protected areas can hold a route closed even after the road itself is passable. So any site quoting you a firm opening date for next summer is guessing. What you can do is read the record of what actually happened.
What the five-year record actually shows
Vegagerðin publishes the real opening date of every highland section, year by year. For the northern F208 — the section running from Sigalda down to Landmannalaugar, and the way most visitors arrive — the last five openings were 12 June, 23 June, 1 June, 12 June and 23 May, giving a five-year average of 2 June. F225 Landmannaleið, the western approach over Dómadalur, is more consistent and slightly later: 9 to 24 June, averaging 16 June. The long southern continuation of F208 towards Eldgjá lags further behind, averaging 25 June, and the Emstruleið and Sprengisandur routes deeper into the interior generally wait until the first week of July.
Why the main road opens earlier than most guides claim
The widely repeated line is that Landmannalaugar opens in mid-to-late June. That is a fair description of F225 and of the roads beyond Landmannalaugar, but it understates the northern F208 by roughly two weeks. In 2025 that section opened on 23 May. The practical consequence is that early-June visitors are often told the highlands are shut when the main access road is already open — and that a warm, dry spring can put Landmannalaugar within reach before the tour operators and bus timetables have started their seasons. Road status and commercial season are two different things, and they do not always line up.
When the highlands close again
Closing is even less predictable than opening, because it is triggered by the first serious snowfall rather than by a thaw. In practice most highland F-roads shut somewhere between mid-September and mid-October, with the second half of September the most common window. Some years a route stays passable into late October; in others an early storm closes it in the first week of September. Vegagerðin does not publish target closing dates in the way it publishes the opening record. The scheduled highland bus seasons are a reasonable proxy for the reliable window, since operators plan around the same weather, and they generally finish in the second or third week of September.
How to check on the morning you travel
Check twice: once when you book, and once on the morning you set out. The live status of every numbered road sits on road.is, which now redirects to umferdin.is, and it is updated through the day. Conditions in the interior can change within hours — a warm afternoon melts more glacier ice and raises every river downstream, and rain does the same thing faster. A road listed as open at breakfast can carry an impassable ford by mid-afternoon. If you are on a guided day tour or the scheduled bus, the operator makes that call for you and will cancel or reroute; if you are driving, the call is entirely yours.
